Redox reaction? What is that!?

The basic element of a battery is called an electrochemical cell. It makes use of an oxidation/reduction (redox) reaction.

What is oxidation/reduction (redox) reaction you might ask? Well, it’s actually pretty simple:

What is oxidation/reduction (redox) reaction you might ask? Well, it’s actually pretty simple:

Redox reaction is the process that gain and loss of electrons. When you lose an electron, it’s oxidation, and when you gain an electron, reduction occurs. These two always happen together.

When a battery is connected to an external electric load, a redox reaction happens. This converts high-energy reactants to lower-energy products, and the free-energy difference is delivered to the external circuit as electrical energy.
